So one of the more ‘interesting’ things about the new Pixel 4 experience is the new Face Unlock feature.  It utilizes illuminators, infrared, & Soli radar in tandem for a secure facial recognition to access your phone and its apps.  There was one key thing discovered this weekend that makes it not so secure.

The fact that your eyes don’t need to be open for Face Unlock to recognize it.  So there goes its only secure way to unlock your phone outside of PINs & passwords.  But Google is aware of the situation and alerted the folks over at The Verge that an update to fix it is in the works and should be made available in coming months.

Here is the official statement as well as a temporary solution below:

We’ve been working on an option for users to require their eyes to be open to unlock the phone, which will be delivered in a software update in the coming months. In the meantime, if any Pixel 4 users are concerned that someone may take their phone and try to unlock it while their eyes are closed, they can activate a security feature that requires a pin, pattern or password for the next unlock. Pixel 4 face unlock meets the security requirements as a strong biometric, and can be used for payments and app authentication, including banking apps. It is resilient against invalid unlock attempts via other means, like with masks.

So will this deter you from picking up the new Pixel?
