Dolby is spearheading the shift into different types of audio but Sony wants to piece of that pie as well.  Yesterday in NYC, they unveiled their new 360 Reality Audio.  This new technology is supposed to be a mesh of stereo and 360-degree sound.

So how does it work?  It utilizes positional audio to put various parts of the music around you.  So you’ll have various instruments + vocals coming from different directions.  To get started, you 1st have to take a picture of your ears and then Sony’s cloud-based algorithm crafts your own unique audio experience – all in under a minute.  It supports high-res audio as well as its supposed to work on headphones.

Sony will kick off 360 Reality Audio later this fall w/ around 1,000 tracks from artists like Billy Joel, Bob Dylan, Charli XCX, and more.  They got 4 music streaming services on board to support the new tech at launch w/ Amazon Music HD, Deezer, nugs.net, and Tidal on both Android & iOS.  It will also be supported on the new Echo Studio and the Chromecast.

Is this something you’d be interested in checking out when it becomes available?
