Back at I/O along w/ the faster version of Google Assistant, they unveiled Live Captions feature coming soon. Live Captions is new technology that acts as a system-wide closed caption for all of your audio minus phone calls (video + voice).
It was one of the many things, they briefly touched on at yesterday’s Made By Google announcement. It can be accessed within the Accessibility in Settings or just a tap when you hit the volume rocker. You can move the text around as well as double tap to show more. Like many of the newer software features, it won’t require a data connection as all of the processing will happen on your device. And w/ that, the captions remain private.
The feature will only be available in English at the moment w/ more languages coming later down the road. Google admits that it won’t be perfect but will be constant improving on it. This will be a huge benefit to those who are deaf or hard of hearing as well as those who don’t want to broadcast what you watching to the world but still enjoy what you’re watching.
The Live Captions go hand-in-hand w/ the transcribe feature in the new Recorder app. The feature is already live on the Pixel 4 but will be making its way to all things Pixel 3 (that’s the regular Pixel 3, 3 XL, 3A, & 3A XL).
Now if this can be implemented into YouTube, that would be a huge improvement. Who’s looking forward to this new feature?
