We heard the rumblings of it ahead of today’s WWDC announcements and it is actually true. Apple looks to start their stepping away from Intel’s processors for their computers. Today they announced their move to ARM-based chips for the computers.
Apple already uses custom chipsets for their iPads, iPhones, and Apple Watches so this would be most logical next step. The big benefit of this is this will help iOS & iPadOS apps run natively on macOS side-by-side in the future. Ergo, making the dream of having all 3 platforms work hand-in-hand more seamlessly. This will also bring less power consumption as well as better/faster performance over Intel chips.
Apple has already been working w/ Microsoft for their Office suite of apps and Adobe for their Creative Cloud suite of apps to be ready when their own Macs running their chipsets. Apple also announced that their ARM-based Macs will begin to arrive later this year so no need to wait. Apple hopes to move their entire Mac lineup to move to their own custom chip within 2 years. They also plan on support Intel-based Macs for years – possibly more than 5 years.
So who’s looking forward to seeing how well their Macs can perform on their own custom chip?
