Earlier this morning, Sony unveiled the long-awaited sequel to their amazing WH-1000XM-line of headphones.  These are the 1000XM4s and while they look exactly the same as the last 2 models, Sony made some notable changes to them.

So they’re using the same Q1N processor from last year’s model to handle the noise-cancellation part of things.  This is now joined by a new Bluetooth audio system chip that analyzes music + surrounding ambient noise @700x per second.   Working in tandem makes for better ambient sound and even better noise-cancelling abilities.   There’s new multi-point support to now pair up to 2 devices at once.

And to beef up the voice call quality, Sony has a new Precise Voice Pickup technology that controls the 5 mics on-board w/ advanced audio signal processing to better pickup your voice more clearly + precisely.  And lastly, they added a new Speak to Chat feature that will pause your music when you start talking to someone (not via phone call) and will resume once you’re conversation is done.

So what’s the same here?  They retained the 40mm drivers while improving the sound output, the controls/buttons are the same, and still keeping that 30 hours battery life.  You can pre-order these today for $350 and will start shipping within the next week or so.

This is great news as if you can’t afford these, the previous-gen model which are still great will now be cheaper.  Either way, its a win-win.
