Today was Apple’s One More Thing event and they unveiled several new announcements coming.  Probably their most important thing and star of the show: their new arm-based M1 CPU.  Like their A14 Bionic CPUs inside of their latest iPhones as it will focus on performance + low-power consumption.

This is an up to 5nm processor w/ 8-core CPU + GPU, 16-core Neural Engine, a universal memory architecture, a USB 4 controller, media encode + decode engines, hardware-verified secure boot, encryption, & run-time protections.  Apple claims it to be the world’s best performance per watt on a CPU while giving you the same peak CPU performance on a laptop but only 25% of the power draw.

Apple also claims their new chips will awake instantly from sleep mode on a Mac and keep up w/ heavy intense apps like 3D programs or editing RAW photos.  It will handle apps like FCPX up to 6x faster and Logic Pro up to 3x faster.   So for Apple’s 1st SoC for the Mac, it sounds impressive in theory but we’ll have to see how it handles in real-world execution.
