After being previously teased, DJI‘s 1st cinema camera is now official.  Meet the Ronin 4D capable of up to 8K video & powered by tons of DJI camera tech.  This is comprised of their 35mm full-frame Zenmuse X9 gimbal camera, 4-axis stabilization, a LiDAR focus system, DJI’s video transmission features, & a control system – all in one camera unit.

You’ll have a 6K model capable of 6K@60fps/4K@120fps and an 8K model capable of 8K@75fps to choose from.  You’ll be able to tackle RAW, ProRes, H.264 video formats w/ 14 stops of dynamic range.  You got a 5.5inch 1080p monitor, 1 top handle, 2 side grips, built-in mics to support 2-channel 24-bit audio, 2 3.5mm jacks, & 2 XLR ports on the Expansion Plate for more input/output options.  In regards to storage, you got their 1TB PROSSD along w/ CFexpress2.0 Type B, & USB-C SSD.  And you got their Intelligent Battery that offers a 4280 mAh battery capable of up to 2 and a half hours of shooting time,

You got support for DJI’s DL,  Leica’s M & Sony’ E-Mount systems in case you prefer to use your own lenses.  And a total of 9 built-in ND filters to fend off sunlight + harsh lighting.  The camera system weighs in at just over 10lbs.  So this will be an adaptable cinema camera as it can be used on a shoulder mount, a jib, a crane, car mount and more as well.

The 6K version of the Ronin 4D will arrive in December w/ the 8K model coming at a later date.  It will start at $7199 for the 6K and $11,499 for the 8K.  It will include things like the LiDAR rangefinder, a monitor, hand grips, top handle, carrying case, & battery.  The 8K model will ship w/ all of that ship w/ all of that but adds a 1TB SSD.  However, the other accessories won’t be included like its wireless monitoring system & focus motor for manual lenses.

This is a nice but niche camera that maybe small production companies & single operators will take advantage of.  I would have loved to see this be a little more affordable at around $4,199 to do some undercutting for something that may or may not be around in a few years.  I’m hoping so but if it doesn’t do well, its out of here.
