Kicking off MWC for 2022, TCL is flexing their muscles and making some of their folding concept phones official. We’ve seen a few behind the scenes and they’re getting closer to putting one out for sale.
So we got 2 shown off here w/ the Fold & Roll and the Ultra Flex concepts. The Fold & Roll offers a 7inch display that literally fold & rolls up to an 8.8inch panel w/ 2880 x 2160 resolution w/ 360ppi. It’s only 8mm thick when open and 18mm thick when folded. It utilizes a flexible panel to fold and internal motors to expand even further. The folding part was fine but I was concerned about the motors. Not because it was a concept and needed to still work out the kinks but more so how many uses until it needs repairs.
And next up, we have the Ultra Flex which is more a standard folding phone that fold both ways. It offers an 8inch PLP AMOLED display w/ 2480 x 1860 resolution and offers stylus support. The panel bends as you would expect w/ ease and internally we see a watchband bracelet-type hinge like the one seen on the earlier Lenovo Yoga Pro laptops year ago.
So just in case you thought TCL was just keeping it safe w/ budget phones, think again. They’re looking to drop folding phones at an affordable price point as well. What’re your thoughts on these folding phone concepts from TCL?
