Kicking off WWDC was the expected arrival of iOS 16 or iPhones. This brings forth more visual changes as well some useful ones as well for all things iPhones – save for the older models that no longer make the update cut this year. There is a lot more present than just a mere lockscreen facelift BTW. Let’s dive into all that it will have to offer.
- Starting off w/ the main stay, the new lockscreen UI brings forth custom wallpapers, the ability to change the date/time’s font color, new widget options for weather, activity rings, calendar event, and updated notifications on the lockscreen.
- You have Live Activities that can pin + manage notifications like live sports scores, Uber/Lyft rides or driver location. All while living at the bottom of the lockscreen.
- You can now edit any messages as well as undo any messages sent in error and mark a message read/unread within the Messages app.
- Apple adds a Buy Now, Pay Later option via their Pay Later feature through Apple Pay. This will actually add the option to track packages for things purchased via Apple Pay and monitor it through the Wallet app.
- The Fitness app which was previously only available to Apple Watch owners now makes it way to all iPhone. Just not sure how well it would work w/o something to accurately track your fitness data though.
- Their Home app gets more useful to monitor the products in your smart home. A much better UI to keep up with your lights, climate, security w/ the ability to view up to 4 cameras at once, & more.
- And last but not least, CarPlay gets big update to add more Apple into your car. So on select vehicles, CarPlay will replace our car’s instrument cluster w/ Apple’s own speed, trip info, fuel, battery levels/gas + oil, time, compass, & more.
Heads up for those of you w/ older iPhones itching to get their hands on iOS 16. You’ll need an iPhone 8 or newer so this puts the iPhone 6S, iPhone 7, and original iPhone SE on the latest cut off list for 2022.
