Looks like the Tesla rivals won’t have to build out their charging network after all. Tesla will be opening up their Supercharger network to non-Tesla electric cars in the US sometime during late 2022. This is some good news for EV owners in case a Supercharger is closer to you than another charging station.
This bit of news comes from a White House memo believe it or not which came out last week. The federal government will be pumping $7.5 billion to accelerate EV charging infrastructure. And one of the conditions of this funding is to make the charging stations available to more than just one car manufacturer.
In case you were unaware, Tesla has around 41,000 charging stations within the US w/ more than over 100,000 outlets. However, they do use proprietary chargers which would have to change to pull this off. The possible solution for this could be the addition of CCS connectors at the stations.
The timing of this news works out well as more EVs are hitting the road or coming closer to being delivered. Anyone who has an non-Tesla EV looking forward to using a Supercharger?
