The day that many of you (myself included) have been waiting for, Google’s folding smartphone w/ the $1,799 Pixel Fold.  They teased it last week online showing everyone that the previous leaks have been spot on in regards to its look and design.  At today’s keynote for Google I/O 2023, we got all of the specs, pricing, and availability for it.  So in case you missed it, here’s everything you need to know about the Google Pixel Fold.

So comparing it to the Galaxy Z Fold 4, the Pixel Fold is shorter and wider in its design.  So much so that the front cover can be universally used more as the Z Fold 4 being tall & narrow, typing on the front cover could be cramp for some.  The Pixel Fold closed has a 5.8inch 120Hz OLED display w/ 2092 x 1080 resolution + up to 1,200 nits of brightness and folds open to a 7.6inch 120Hz OLED display w/ 2208 x 1840 resolution + up to 1,000 nits of brightness.  All in an IPX8 dust/water-resistance body that weighs in at 10 grams.

Google’s foldable will be powered by their latest Tensor G2 CPU coupled w/ 12GB of RAM and choice of 256GB or 512GB of storage.  Also inside is a 4821 mAh battery that Google claims up to 24-hour battery.  This will also have 30W fast charging via USB-C and wireless charging.  It will have stereo speakers, 3 mics, and support Spatial Audio.  And the same biometrics from the Pixel 7 w/ Face Unlock and fingerprint reader on the Power button.

On the camera side of things, the Fold has a f/1.7 48MP main camera w/ OIS, a f/2.2 10.8MP ultrawide camera, f/3.0 10.8MP telephoto w/ 5x optical zoom + Super Res Zoom up to 20x, an f/2.0 8MP inner camera, and a f/2.2 9.5MP selfie camera.  You can shoot 4K up to 60fps 10-bit HDR on the rear shooter, slo-mo video up to 240fps, 4K timelapse, 4K cinematic pan stabilization, Face Unblur, Magic Eraser, Long Exposure, Night Sight, and more.

Now after playing with it for a little bit, it will be an amazing alternative to what Samsung has to offer.  Google’s custom hinge allows for a full 180-degree range of motion.  This helps to make the Pixel Fold close completely as the Galaxy Z Fold 4 leaves an unwelcome gap when closed that traps lint/dust.  Add the growing list of amazing Pixel software features as well as their amazing cameras, Google might have a winner on their hands.

Pre-orders for the Pixel Fold is now live for those of you who’re interested as it will arrive in 2 colors of Obsidian and Porcelain.
