It’s been a whole two years since Amazon made any changes in its pricing. I guess they feel as if they’re overdue. Late last week, Amazon announced some changes coming soon to its Prime Video streaming service, which include a price increase.
Beginning on April 10th, its ad-free tier will become Prime Ultra and will be the only way to stream 4K-quality content. Its pricing will get a bump from $3 to $5 monthly, and Prime subscribers won’t have access without paying extra for it.
The new tier will support up to five streams simultaneously, up to 100 downloads, and access to Dolby Atmos audio and Dolby Vision HDR. Those who don’t upgrade to the Prime Ultra plan will get the return of Dolby Vision in 1080p and an increase of downloads (from 25 to 50) and simultaneous streams (from three to four).
What’s the reason for the increase this time? Basically, to make up for the contracts to stream live sporting events and add premium features to its ad-free tier. At this point, just bring back Limewire for content, as I know many would risk it.
