After hearing rumblings about Apple’s HomePad, or smart display, earlier this year, I think it’s safe to say it’s actually coming. Bloomberg dropped a report this morning, which included a reveal date, additional details, and other Apple products set to be unveiled alongside it.
The report suggests its design is inspired by the iconic iMac G4, with a 6-inch square display equipped with a camera and mic that’s attached to a HomePod speaker. The HomePad is said to arrive in both countertop and wall-mounted options, but there is no word on pricing as of yet.
The HomePad will use facial (not FaceID) and voice recognition. The entire design of the hub is said to be as thick as an iPhone, with a black bezel around its display and rounded corners. There will be no volume or power buttons or an internal battery, as it will need to stay plugged in via USB-C. The screen will connect to its base with a polished metal arm. It will sit over a round, metal base comprised of multiple rings of speaker holes with a rubber bottom.
As far as its rumored capabilities, you’ll be able to access Siri AI, able to control smart thermostats, locks, lights, and other connected devices along with FaceTime calls, iCloud photo gallery, stream music/videos, and nearly anything else you would do with a smart display.
With the HomePad, Apple is said to announce a new Apple TV 4K with Siri AI support and a HomePod mini update with additional colors. However, if you’re awaiting for the company to update its larger HomePod speaker, you’ll have to keep waiting, unfortunately. A product update is on the way, just not yet.
