Yesterday, Qualcomm kicked off their Snapdragon Tech summit in Hawaii to unveil their latest flagship chipsets.  So  moving forward, Qualcomm is ditching the triple-digit numbering system for the processors and trying something a bit different.  Introducing the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 CPU for mobile devices.

The new 8 Gen 1 CPU will offer up to 30% faster in CPU performance, 30% faster GPU w/ using 25% less power than the Snapdragon 888 CPU.  It will include its own proprietary X65 5G modem capable of up to 10Gbps in theory, packed w/ an 18-bit image signal processor which would process image data 4,000 x more than on the Snapdragon 888, and can record up to 8K HDR video @30fps/4K@120fps/720p@960fps.  So you should be able to support some crazy good video depending on the device manufacturers image processing.

It will also bring forth aptX Lossless Bluetooth codec to output up to 16-bit CD quality audio streaming over a Bluetooth, and lastly, support for Android Ready SE for things like digital car keys + IDs.

However, there is this one new feature called always-on camera which will do things turning off your screen automatically when you put your phone down or sees someone trying to read over your shoulder.  This sounds like a privacy nightmare in the making but we gotta see how its implemented on devices.

We can expect to see the 1st-wave of Snapdragon 8 Gen 1-powered phones at the end of the year w/ more devices arriving during the 1st half of 2022.
