The iPhone Air was a technological feat of engineering with an ultra-thin, lightweight phone with a tough titanium frame. But its goal of being a success was also a long shot, due to its single camera lens and shorter battery life compared to other iPhones.

While Apple isn’t killing off the thin iPhone line as a whole, the company is going back to the drawing board a bit. According to The Information, Apple has already scaled back production of the current model due to its low sales. Apple is pivoting to make some changes to the Air’s sequel, which the company has no plans to release next year.

Another report from The Information suggests the next-gen iPhone Air would offer a second camera lens, a larger battery, and the iPhone 17 Pro’s vapor chamber for improved internal cooling. The previously mentioned upgrades aimed at addressing customer complaints about the first-generation Air. However, these upgrades would potentially push the second-gen iPhone Air until Spring 2027.

If Apple can hit these targets, this would mean a very different iPhone release strategy than we’ve seen in years, with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Fold releasing in the fall of 2026, and the iPhone 18, 18E, and possibly the new Air releasing in spring 2027.
