Rivian announced the R2 SUV back in 2024 and revealed a $45,000 starting price point, but we haven’t gotten much information since then until now. Earlier this afternoon at SXSW, Rivian unveiled the pricing and specs for all trims of its electric SUV, the R2.

The R2 is a mildly smaller two-row, electric SUV. It measures in at 185.9 inches long, the second-row offering 40.4 inches of head and legroom, and a total of 70 cubic ft of cargo space with the rear seats folded (it’s only 29 cubic ft with the rear seats up). Inside, it borrows design and features from Rivian’s other vehicles, with an overall minimalist design that includes a birch wood trim, dual high-resolution screens, and two gloveboxes, and adds new control wheels on the steering wheel with haptics to control media, climate, and drive modes.

The company’s hands-free driving technology, or Autonomy+ hardware, will be standard on every R2, but it will be free for 60 days, and customers will have to decide between a one-time fee of $2,500 or a $50 monthly subscription. Both the Premium and Performance trims offer heated/ventilated seats, door-mounted rechargeable flashlight, a 975W sound system, and a rear window that can roll down.

R2 Standard (starting at $45,000)

  • Coming late 2027

The R2’s price point is an intriguing starting point as it undercuts both gasoline and EV SUVs. Especially as the company’s R1S and R1T EVs are on the pricier side.
