Late last week, a disappointing announcement began making its rounds, as the price for YouTube Premium is going up. I got my email notification about everything over the weekend, as I’m a YouTube Premium Family subscriber grandfathered from the Google Play Music era.

The student edition of the YouTube Premium plan is going from $8 to $9, the individual premium plan is going from $14 to $16 monthly, and the family premium plan is going from $23 to $27. Essentially, it’s a $1 to $4 monthly increase for current subscribers, as new customers will see the new pricing immediately.

The Premium subscription includes an ad-free YouTube experience, the ability to download videos for offline viewing, background play with picture-in-picture mode, the YouTube Music app, and more. If you’re an avid YouTube user, watching its content ad-free is the only way to go. However, with YouTube dogpiling with the price hikes of just about every other streaming service, you’ll have to decide if it’s still worth it for you or not.
