Yup. So, after 15 years of Fitbit at the forefront of health tracking, it is going away—but in name only. The Fitbit app will now be known as Google Health. The announcement arrives alongside the company’s new Fitbit Air screenless wearable. However, if you’ve been using the recent public preview of Fitbit, you won’t see much change outside of the logo and branding.
The Google Health app brings forth all of the latest features from the Fitbit Public Preview. You’re greeted with four tabs at the bottom: Today, Fitness, Sleep, and Health, and they provide information about your health and overall wellness. All of which include step-by-step workouts with adaptable fitness plans; analyzing and tracking your sleep patterns; logging and monitoring your menstrual cycle; managing your stress by logging your moods; and tracking your nutrition by logging your foods conversationally with your coach or uploading a photo of your meal. Of course, there are two tiers of basic and premium, and the latter gets you access to all of the goodies.
The rebranding also applies to the recent Personal Health Coach, which is powered by Gemini and is becoming the Google Health Coach. For the uninitiated, the Health Coach offers 24/7 guidance for your overall fitness and sleep goals, which can be accessed and edited at any time and includes conversational check-ins. But like Fitbit’s Public Preview, the Health Coach will only be available for Google Health Premium subscribers, which will cost you $10 monthly or $100 for the year. Good news for those of you who already subscribe to Google’s AI Pro or Ultra subscription plans, Google Health Premium will be included at no additional charge.
The new Google Health app will arrive in an update for current Fitbit users via the App Store (iOS) and Google Play (Android). The new app supports Health Connect and Apple Health, granting it more access than Fitbit previously had. And if you’re still using Google Fit, you’ll be migrated to Google Health sometime later this year. The new Google Health app is set to arrive on May 19 for all.
