As they promised last week, Amazon has officially entered the TV streaming business w/ the FireTV set-top box.  This morning the company unveiled what they believe to be the future of their video business in the home.  FireTV is doing everything you would expect from an Amazon device and more.

Inside of their streaming box lies a 1.7GHz Snapdragon quad-core CPU, dedicated GPU, 2GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, dual-band, dual antenna Wi-Fi + MIMO, 1080p quality w/ Dolby Digital surround sound out via HDMI or optical.  All of this is to power its streaming & gaming apps.  All of this to better process the very impressive voice search via the remote control.

“Premium products, non-premium prices.”

At launch FireTV will support the likes of Netflix, Hulu, WatchESPN, MLB, Crackle, Vimeo, NBA & YouTube for TV content.  On the music side of things, we will see Pandora, iHeartRadio, TuneIn, and music purchases made on Amazon.com – all arriving sometime next month.  And on the gaming side of things (also arriving next month), they’ve partnered up w/ Disney, 2K, Ubisoft, EA, Sega, DoubleTime, and TellTaleGames.  Their box will support a gaming controller (yes, the same one that we saw) as it will cost $39.99 and come w/ 1,000 Amazon coins to spend on games.  Amazon will offer 1,000 of their games for free just to lure you in to play.  Good move.

Also on-board is Amazon’s X-Ray for Movies & TV Shows, 2nd screen integration w/ Fire tablets, FreeTime for the little ones, and integration for Amazon’s Cloud Drive.  Of course you’ll need a Prime account to access all of this goodness.

FireTV begins shipping  today for only $99.  Are you buying one?
