I know everyone is excited about the new iPhone 4 for Verizon but there are some points of interest to keep in mind before jumping ship or upgrading to the CDMA iPhone 4.   Now that we have some actual info on it, there are some differences between AT&T’s GSM and Verizon’s CDMA i4s like:

AT&T:

  • offers early upgrades at launch
  • offers global roaming
  • has the ability of simultaneous voice and data
  • doesn’t have the 3G mobile hotspot feature (yet, maybe?)

Verizon:

  • offers 3G mobile hotspot for up to five devices
  • offers an improved antenna design, so no more holding your i4 a certain way for reception
  • lacks global roaming ability
  • can’t offer the ability to process both voice and data

With all the points above coupled with Verizon offering the fifth generation of the iPhone.   If you upgrade now you will be stuck in a contract when Apple and Verizon announces the next iPhone sometime this summer.   In TGSB’s humble opinion, I think it would be in Verizon’s subscribers best interest to wait before picking one as you won’t experience the full iPhone 4 capabilities with their inability to process voice and data at the same time.   But if you think the new iPhone won’t be better than the i4 or you’d be able to sell yours by that time, February 10th you know where you’d better be.
