After years of the rumor of this notion would ever happen, today we finally get confirmation.  BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins announced that their popular instant messaging service BBM will make its way to Android and iOS as a standalone app.  Android & iOS users will have access to group chats, voice notes, and sharing within BBM Groups at launch.

BBM comes to all except Windows Phone but is it too late?

Expect updates to come in the future to add BBM Voice, screen sharing, video abilities,  and the new BBM Channels feature.  BBM will work on devices running iOS 6 & Android 4.0 ICS or higher.  App approval is pending on Apple & Google’s app stores, of course.  Not sure if this would help or hurt the brand at this point but being an iOS user with no decent messaging app, I welcome it.
