And just like that, the merger finally is complete.  Metro PCS is now part of T-Mobile and will begin operating as T-Mobile US, Inc.   We reported on the merger back in October as T-Mo’s parent company wanted to add Metro PCS to the 4th place carrier for $1.5 billion.   And unlike the failed AT&T/T-Mobile merger, this deal went smoothly.  FCC, board members all agreed and made it happen.  Now to get into what that means if you are a Metro PCS or T-Mobile subscriber.

In reality, the merger was all about spectrum and subscribers.

Metro PCS customers will be completely carried over as T-Mo customers by 2015.  Since Metro uses CDMA  and T-Mo rocks GSM technologies, that unused space turns into more LTE spectrum.  Something T-Mo has been acquiring a bunch of lately to offer more coverage faster than the competition.   They may even beat everyone to rolling out an Advanced LTE network.  Maybe.  Time will tell if all parties are actually pleased with the outcome of joining forces.
