Earlier this year, AT&T and GM announced a partnership to provide in-car wireless service for their 2014 line of vehicles.  Yesterday during the kickoff of CE Week I was able to sit inside and get a demo of a concept of what one can expect.  This makes for some interesting ideas one can bring to the table of a vehicle with its own data connection.

Cars with built-in Wi-Fi and App Store means a lot open possibilities.

I sat inside of a Chevrolet Malibu outfitted with several concepts of what one may expect for the 2014 line.

  • You have a center console that controls everything from security to apps to audio to phone to OnStar.
  • There many on awesome options that can/should be utilized when parked like watching live TV or streaming Netflix + Hulu for other passengers.  From the console or stream apps from other smartphones or tablets of other passengers in the car.
  • The GM cars have open APIs to invite many developers to bring their apps to next year’s GM models.
  • Outfitted with two Logitech webcam inside and several smaller ones outside the perimeter of the car for security purposes.  Allowing you to view all aspects from home or your smartphone when not inside.
  • Combined with the power of OnStar, online tracking of your car’s whereabouts from your smartphone or tablet.

GM is the parent company of Buick, Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC and have been working with its subsidiary OnStar since 2009 as Verizon Wireless was its previous service provider.  The new Internet-connected cars will become available next year and will offer a variety of data packages for your vehicle.
