At 1st glance, you may not notice much new w/ Android 4.4 but Google did a lot of smaller tweaks that will make a huge difference for consumers and developers alike. They started out by removing unnecessary background services and cut back further on memory consumption on the entire OS as well as Google services like Chrome & YouTube. For those of you on older Android devices and stuck in a contract, they made sure to make this update comfortable enough to run on 512MB of RAM that are out there. Now on the the more interesting changes.
With KitKat, its the little things that make the biggest difference.
The icons are more minimal and a larger in the app drawer, the status and notification bar are now see-through, the launcher on the homescreen is more refined, and the details of Android are now more polished than ever.
- Hangouts now doubles as your all-in-one messaging app, as we knew it would happen.
- The built-in Caller ID of the Dialer now automatically scans numbers not in your contacts that are listed as businesses.
- They’ve added Emoji to the Google Keyboard finally.
- Even faster multitasking.
- More support for HP’s ePrint for Google Cloud Print.
- QuickOffice gets a new look.
- HDR+ photography.
- Improved tap to pay NFC support.
- Google Now is more in the evident within the OS.
- Built-in pedometer support.
No word on when KitKat will make its way to other Nexus devices but we do know that the Samsung Galaxy Nexus will not be supported. Ouch!
