In a report from The Information, the Android landscape as we know it could be could change completely. Google is looking to get more hands on with Android and how it is distributed to the masses. The report states that Google is looking to work with manufacturers and carriers to create a more streamlined Android experience. Android “Silver” looks to be a more robust version of the “Google Play Edition” program they are currently operating.
Google will look to offer a premium line of devices running stock Android with limited carrier and manufacturer apps installed. Silver is said to be replacing the Nexus line as soon as next year. With Silver, Google is reportedly looking to compete directly against the iPhone with high-end Android phones. Google reportedly already has Motorola, LG, Sprint and T-Mobile lined up as partners in this endeavor. But what really makes this idea intriguing is that Google is looking to spend up upwards of a BILLION dollars on the marketing campaign for Silver.
The report talks of plans to not only carry the phone on the Google Play Store but also in retail locations such as kiosks where they can have trained employees helping customers with all of their Android purchasing needs. This is all very interesting news from Google if it’s true. Google rolling out a program like this could really change the game in the Android universe and the mobile space as a whole.
