iOS 8

After a few leaks on what exactly the next version of iOS would have, it now becomes official. Welcome to the 8th iteration of iOS (or iOS 8).  Apple is focusing this update to be dedicated more towards the health + home aspects of consumers.

  • New interactive Notification Center where you can respond to alerts or messages from that screen as well as the lockscreen as well as widget support.
  • Quick Access to contacts borrows cues from the new multitasking from iOS 7. Allowing you to select a contact to call, message or FaceTine from anywhere in the OS.
  • Spotlight search now expands to points of interest, news, songs, and iTunes along w/ better suggestions.
  • New gestures for flagging, marking, and deleting comes to the Mail app.
  • The new QuickType keyboard now offers predictive suggestions a la Google Keyboard or SwiftKey.
  • Messages now offers the ability to name a thread, add + remove, do not disturb, location-sharing, or leave thread within Group Messaging.
  • You can also add audio + video recordings in Messages w/ a new feature called Tap To Talk.
  • Family Sharing allows you to share photos, calendars, media, reminders, iTunes purchases or find my friends. This supports up to 6 family members on both iPhones + iPads.
  • Siri get built-in Shazam support, streaming voice recognition, iTunes purchase support, and now offers support for over 22 languages.
  • Apple opens up the platform to now allow 3rd-party keyboard (system-wide!).  This is huge!!!

As expected, iOS 8 will arrive to all things iOS later in the fall.  This update goes as far back as the iPhone 4S, iPad 2, & 5th-gen iPod Touch.
