On the 2nd day of I/O, we got more of a surprise hit from Google’s ATAP aka Advanced Technology and Projects team (the crew responsible for the modular phone: Project Ara). Their job is to gather the best & brightest to come up w/ great yet realistic products in a short period of time. They had 3 showstoppers that they unveiled/demoed here at I/O.
This is what Google I/O is all about.
Kicking things off is Project Soli, which is a small radar sensor that can track hand movements. Basically providing the tools to create Minority Report-like setup. The we have Project Jacquard, which add interactive fabrics weaved into the everyday clothing. This will allow you to have smart clothes where you can control the music on your phone or answer calls by swiping on the designated sensor on your clothes. And lastly we have Project Vault, a microSD card that is a full-fledged computer touting 4GB of storage and runs its own OS. This is the new inconspicuous way for security.
While we still didn’t get any new details on Project Ara, we got to see them get closer to fixing issues and get closer to launch. They did put together an entire device live on stage then added the camera module after powering up it and took photos right away.
Google’s ATAP appears to be the missing link to get us to the Back To The Future pt 2 & Jetson technology in our lifetime.
