DJI just announced some new optics arriving to their flagship drone: the Inspire 1. There cameras were already really good 12MP shooter that’s capable of 4K video at great frame rates. They’re going the route of adding micro four-thirds sensors on board dubbed the Zenmuse X5 & X5R.
These new drones have interchangeable camera lenses.
Both cameras weigh in at 0.75lbs and offers 16MP photos & 4K video @30fps but the X5R is the one heavy into video is gonna want. The X5R can do all of that plus record video in lossless 4K CinemaDNG that data can be stored via microSD or SSD mounted on the drone. Pilots can adjust the aperture & focus on these lenses as well before take off.
These cameras have lenses that can be swapped out ranging from 12mm to 17mm. Just imagine when adapters are made for this, the camera community is gonna go nuts w/ this.
These can be added to existing DJI units but it won’t be for the cheap. The X5 body w/ a 15mm f/1,7 lens will cost you $4,499 while the X5R is priced at $7,999. The X5 ships at the end of the month while the X5R is expected to arrive at the end of the year.
