project ara io16Project Ara.  It is one of the more interesting things that have come out of Google I/O in the past few years.  A completely modular smartphone where every piece from the CPU, camera, speaker, etc., can be swapped out for another one.  For the many of you who were looking forward to Project Ara devices, prepare to be crushed.

Set to launch in the fall for developers and then to consumer next year, it was at the verge of officially seeing the light of day – until now.  According to a report from Reuters, Google has cut the project completely.  While we won’t see Ara as it was, there is the possibility of licensing and partnering the technology to other companies.

Maybe LG can beef up their modular efforts or Motorola can get even better or another company might want to take a stab at it.  Until then, R.I.P. Project Ara *insert sad emoji*.
