Yesterday, Activision and company announced an update for Destiny that’s now available that will bring forth a new feature: private matches. All of this ahead of their newest expansion, Rise Of Iron, arriving next week.

Private matches will differ from the standard multiplayer so you won’t stuck w/ the standard rules of each map. You will be able to choose your own mode, maps, time limits, score limits, Light level, and time of day options to completely customize your Crucible experience.
Consider this a preview of some of the new things coming to the new expansion pack on September 20th. Which will bring forth the aforementioned feature along w/ 3 new maps (4 if you’re on PS4) and a new Crucible mode: Supremacy.
The update is live on PS4 & Xbox One Destiny gamers.
