Last night at Universal Studios in LA, Tesla revealed their latest unveiling w/ a new integrated solar roof & new Powerwall. Now that Tesla & SolarCity are under the same umbrella, this is their vision of the future of home energy management.
The new tech was displayed on several homes that were used for film/TV by Universal Studios. The solar roof is a collaborative product between the 2 companies that involve a hydrographical-printed process that arrives in a variety of options like Textured Glass Tile, Slate Glass Tile, Tuscan Glass Tile, and Smooth Glass Tile. From afar they won’t even look like solar panels until you get up close to them as they will last 2-3 times longer than your average roof.
Moving on to the Powerwall 2.0, it will get a modest update from the original w/ twice the energy. It can now store 14 kWh, draw continuous at 5 kW and a 7 kW peak. Not bad for a battery that can be used inside/outside, floor/wall mounted w/ a 10-year warranty. Of course w/ double the energy means a higher price tag involved. Now w/ an integrated inverter & battery pack, it will cost you $5,500.
Installations for the solar roof kick off next summer while the Powerwall 2 starts shipping in December. Unfortunately, no word on pricing for the solar roof at the moment but don’t expect it to be cheap, though.
So who’s ready to prep their home for the future of energy?
