Huawei is kicking off MWC this year w/ a bang. Meet their new folding phone w/ the Huawei Mate X. This is thinner and better engineered than Samsung’s Galaxy Fold. Let’s dive into the details on whats new.
Huawei is flexing the engineering abilities w/ the Mate X – pun intended.
Huawei is utilizing a flexible OLED panel for their folding device. The main area when closed gives you a 6.6inch 2480 x 1148 resolution, the rear one is a 6.4inch 2480 x 892 resolution when folded, and the main display unfolded gives you an 8inch 2480 x 2200 resolution. This all makes for a super-thin device as the Mate X is a mere 5.4mm thin when unfolded and 11mm thick when folded.
Outside of that, the Mate X will be powered by Huawei’s-own Kirin 980 CPU, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, running Android 9 Pie w/ EMUI 9.1.1, Bluetooth 5.0 w/ aptX/aptX HD/LDAC support, a fingerprint reader on the side Power button, dual SIM card support, 5G modem inside, and a massive 4500 mAh battery w/ a 55W rapid charger via USB-C port.
On the camera side of things, Huawei made sure to maintain the same features from their Mate 20 Pro line of smartphones. You got a Leica-branded shooters w/ a 40MP wide-angle, a 16MP ultra wide angle, & a 8MP Telephoto lens on board. That’s really all the info we have on the shooters at the moment.
Huawei prides themselves using their Falcon Wing design that they’ve been working on for the last 3 years. The Mate X starts at $2,600 though which is about $500 more than what Samsung is charging for theirs. It is due out sometime during the 2nd half of the year.
Not that folding 5G phones are gonna be the new wave but now that we have two of them, which one are you interested in: Huawei or Samsung?
