Like we told you earlier this week, Tesla announced their faster take on Supercharging last night. They’re already the fastest way to charge you Tesla and now they’re about to get even faster.
Supercharging v3 will reduce charging times by 50% on average and thanks to a new liquid-cooled cable, you’ll get rates up to 250kW per car instead of splitting between multiple cars. The Tesla vehicle that will get most advantage of this is the Model 3. You’ll be able to get 75 mile-charge in 5 minutes. But the Model S & X will get faster charging via update. The update allows their batteries to raise its temperature to reduce average charge times by 25%.
The current superchargers max out at 150kW but caps out at 120kW. However the faster speeds are still theoretically slower than VW’s 350kW Electrify America charging stations. The 1st v3 Supercharger station is in Fremont, CA and available for Tesla’s early access program members at the moment. With software updates and adding new ones, v3 should be the only way to charge on their network by the end of the year here in the US.
With the Model Y announcement right around the corner, I’m sure they will mirror the Model 3 and take full advantage of these faster Superchargers. Who’s looking forward to v3 coming to a station near you?
