Mario & Sonic at the Olympics Games Tokyo 2020: Mini Game Heaven

Mario & Sonic: the tag-team crossover made in video game heaven.  It happened 1st for the 2007 Olympics and went on to create 4 more titles across various Nintendo consoles from the DS to the Wii U.  The last time we saw them together was 3 years ago for the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

Like clockwork, they’re back together for another game celebrating the upcoming 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.  We even get a chance to enjoy the new sporting events coming to Olympics like skateboarding, surfing, sport climbing, & karate while playing as your favorite Mario & Sonic characters.  You can play with up to 8 players (via online play) and all of play modes like TV, Tabletop, & Handheld modes.

This also supports 30 games in total w/ 20 3D events and 10 old-school style 2D events.  The regular events are 110m hurdles, 4 x 100m relay race, 100m race, triple jump, javelin throw, discus throw, fencing, archery, rugby, soccer, canoe double 100m, equestrian jumping, gymnastics, badminton, table tennis, boxing, dream shooting, dream racing, and dream karate.  For the 2D games you got the 100m dash, 400m hurdles, long jump, marathon race, 10m diving platform, vault, kayak, judo, volleyball, and shooting like Duck Hunt.

Combining the 2 worlds of Mario & Sonic, you got Mario, Sonic, Luigi, Tails, Peach, Knuckles, Daisy, Amy, Bowser, Dr. Eggman, Wario, Waluigi, Shadow, Silver, Yoshi, Metal Sonic, Donkey Kong, Blaze, Bowser Jr., and Vector for you to choose from.  Each of the characters bring a different aspect to the each of the games w/ some being obviously faster, some are more all around, and other advantages.

OK, now that we got all of the details out of the way, let’s talk about the game itself.  You got the options of Quick Match which allows you to play whatever event you want in either single mode or multi-player mode, Story Mode which gives you the plot of Dr. Eggman + Bowser trapping Mario & Sonic and themselves into an older game console, Local Play, & Online Play.  The Story Mode does have a lot of talking in-between events but definitively informative w/ details on Olympic history and the last time they were held in Tokyo back in 1964.

Playing on the Switch makes it super versatile.  Meaning you can use the entire console w/ joycons attached or detached making using of the motion sensors to give you some Wii action gameplay – if you feel like working up a sweat.  For some events, I preferred the entire console and others – joycons detached.  I actually spent most of my time within Quick Match to have my pick at the litter of events to compete in.  The 2D gaming gives you the retro + pixelated version of the character so you get OG Super Mario Bros Mario, Bowser, other others and get Sonic, Egghead, & other others from OG Sonic form the Genesis days.  BTW, my favorite events were boxing, karate, skateboarding, and the javelin throw is what I spent most of my time enjoying.

Mario & Sonic brings the fun for one & the many.

I know its been quite some time since we’ve done a gaming review.  We were supposed to do one for Call Of Duty Mobile but couldn’t happen due to time constraints.  But scheduling worked out so we can dive into Mario & Sonic for the Switch.  I picked up a Switch to dive into mini game heaven w/ the latest Mario & Sonic installment at the Olympics.  I feel like most people will gravitate towards the Quick Play over Story Mode but I could be wrong.  I think most people will enjoy it as you can enjoy playing the events either by yourself, w/ friends, and w/ a party.
