Google Maps has been around since 2005. Let that sink in a bit. Its almost hard to believe that we’ve been trusting Google for GPS navigation + mapping for a 15 years. That’s a long time as it a teenager now almost able to drive w/ a permit. Today, they’re announcing some new features as well as an updated logo to go along w/ it.
The new logo is a pin w/ Google colors inside of it w/ a white background. As far as the new features, you’re getting 2 new tabs at the bottom w/ ‘Contribute’ + ‘Updates’. The For You tab is now called the ‘Saved’ tab as well. This will focus on more user-submitted content and have accessible rather than buried within their menus.
Also new is crowd-sourced info for public transportation like is the bus/train you’re waiting for crowded or not. And a lightweight mode for their AR Live View feature that will show you your destination w/o the 3D turn-by-turn mode.
Look out for the new icon + tab starting today for both Android and iOS while the public transit/Live View stuff is due out next month. Cheers to Google Maps on their 15th birthday and here’s to many more.
