Apple’s macOS update brings us a few things over from iOS to all things Mac.  This update ain’t as big as the iOS 14 update but a good update nonetheless.  Let’s get into all that it entails.

  • Kicking things off, we got a customizable Control Center (toggling brightness, Do Not Disturb, etc.).
  • A new Notification Center that keeps all of your notifications & widgets in 1 spot.
  • Safari gets its biggest update that is now 50% faster than Chrome & is said to easier on the battery.  
  • Redesigned native apps from Mail, Photos, Notes, & iWork.  
  • New search feature within Messages for better organization and adds inline replies, customizable icons, @ signs in group chats, new photo selection interface, message effects w/ Memoji stickers, and can pin up to 9 chats that syncs w/ iOS + iPadOS as well.
  • Maps for Mac gives you custom Guides, a new 360-degree location views, bike/electric vehicles directions, live updates for shared ETAs, congestion zones, & indoor maps.  Also, adding support for Canada, Ireland, & UK later this year.  
  • New Dock buttons have a new look to mirror that on iOS and has been lifted from the bottom of the display.

The developer beta macOS Big Sur is out today for developers and is coming as a public beta next month.  The final version is due out in the fall for free.  As far as what Mac products will Big Sur will work on are MacBook (2015), MacBook Air (2013), MacBook Pro (late 2013), Mac Mini (2014), iMac (2014), iMac Pro (2017), and Mac Pro (2013).
