So yesterday was a day that many Tesla stockholders, fans, & enthusiasts have been waiting for: Battery Day. We were teased to see exciting new things for Tesla’s future like a million-mile battery & other forms of innovations. We got that as well as an even faster Model S, more details on their improved battery technology and more.
Let’s dive into the more interesting parts of it all, shall we?
Better & Longer-Lasting Batteries
Tesla’s new ways to power their vehicles are w/ something they call ‘tabless’ batteries or dubbed the 4860 cells. These will offer 6x more power, boost the range by 16%, & less cost per kWh (kilowatt hour). These will be produced in-house to make the costs lower as well as the sale price of their vehicles as well. Now due to pushing things in-house, doesn’t mean that Tesla will be cutting off their battery suppliers. They’ll still be copping cells from Panasonic, LG Chem, & more.
An Even Faster Model S Capable Of Over 500 Miles
Next up, an even faster version of the Model S – even faster than their Ludicrous mode. Meet the Model S w/ the Plaid powertrain that will give you more range + more speed of course, for more $$. The name comes from the great + classic film Spaceballs. This will give you up to 520 miles, a top speed of up to 200 mph, and going 0-60 mph in under 2 seconds. The Plaid Model S will cost even more than the standard one as it will cost $140,000. This trim will be available sometime in late 2021.
Their next big goal is a $25,000 Tesla
Once upon a time, Tesla’s big goal was a more affordable EV for $30K. And they hit that a few years ago w/ the Model 3. Yesterday, they announced a new goal for an even more affordable EV: a $25,000 one powered by their next-gen battery from earlier. The new batteries will help make the overall costs lower to pull this off.
