After leaked reports on the matter, OnePlus has confirmed that it’s severing ties with Hasselblad for its imaging technology for better mobile photography. OnePlus is looking inward to develop its own camera imaging engine for better photography moving forward.

OnePlus and Hasselblad began their partnership back in 2021 for the launch of the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro flagship phones, with the intention of beefing up its lackluster photography at the time. OnePlus has already been working on its own imaging engine, called DetailMax Engine, with the goal to pass the pinch-to-zoom test and offer improved clarity with less noise and accurate details.

OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has been testing a prototype of it and thinks its users will be pleased. Lau also said it’s expected to arrive on the next flagship, which is rumored to be the OnePlus 15 with a 165Hz display. They’re skipping 14 because the number “4” is considered unlucky in China. The only odd part about all of this is that Oppo and Hasselblad just extended their partnership, as Oppo is the parent company of OnePlus.

The OnePlus cameras have been its Achilles’ heel among Android flagship cameras, so I’m looking forward to seeing what OnePlus has been cooking up.
