Yup, it begins, as this truly marks the end of an era. Sony announced today that beginning January 2028, the company will cease production of physical discs for new PlayStation games. Oh, and this move will essentially put GameStop out of business, not sure if any gamers would be heartbroken about it, though.

Moving forward, all new game releases will be digital-only, deeming your physical drive strictly as a CD and 4K Blu-Ray Player. Apparently, the recent announcement of Grand Theft Auto 6 being a digital-only game was a sign of things to come. Hopefully, these companies’ servers and our ISPs can handle all digital games and updates. Because despite gamers’ opinions on this shift, they’re absolutely making fetch happen.

Recent data shows that full-game digital sales account for nearly 100% of sales for both PlayStation and Xbox. So of course, Microsoft and Sony are wondering why they’re still making physical game discs and hardware with disc drives.

This news also arrives with the announcement of the PlayStation Store killing off support for the PS3 and PS Vita.
