After yesterday’s news of PlayStation soon ditching physical discs and making digital-only games, a new report suggests Xbox may be doing something similar but better executed. The report claims Xbox is working on a way to turn your physical games into digital copies.
The Verge’s Tom Warren reported that Xbox has been testing a disc-to-digital feature for the past two months. This feature would allow gamers to essentially digitize their entire Xbox game collection, namely your Xbox One and Xbox Series S/X discs. Unfortunately, this feature isn’t set to work for Xbox 360 and original Xbox games.
The process is mildly similar to Nintendo’s game-key cards for its Switch 2 console. Microsoft will grant you something called ‘digital entitlement,’ which ties the game to your Microsoft account and will allow gamers to borrow and resell the game. This will definitely come in handy if Microsoft follows Sony’s footsteps for a disc-less next-gen gaming console, which they more than likely will.
While the gaming climate is heading towards a digital future, consisting of digital downloads and multiple storage options to house your digital game collection. At least Xbox is looking to implement a way to retain your old game library instead of repurchasing your old games. But this disc-to-digital feature needs to actually come into fruition first.
