So earlier today, Sony had an announcement out in NYC to unveil not just one but 2 new mirrorless cameras. Introducing the new a6100 and the a6600 cameras from Sony. One is a much-needed update and the other kind of steps of the toes of one of their other shooters.
Let’s start w/ the a6100. This is the update to the new legendary a6000 camera. It offers a 24.2MP sensor powered by their latest BIONZ X image processor, capable of 4K video, 11fps continuous shooting w/ AF tracking, 425 phase-detection AF points, real-time eye tracking/AF for photos only though, an 180-degree tilting touchscreen, and the world’s fastest auto-focus @ 0.02 sec. Very nice!
Now moving onto the new a6600 camera. Like the a6100, it has a 24.2MP sensor powered by the new BIONZ X image CPU, 425 phase-detection AF points, 180-degree tilting touchscreen, and the world’s fastest 0.02 second auto-focus. But what’s different here is the added 5-axis optical in-body image stabilization, real-time tracking for both photos + videos, double the battery life thanks to their new Z batteries that gets you up to 720 shots, and 4K HDR video w/ HLG + S Log video formats.
The a6100 will be out in October starting at $750 for the body alone while the a6600 comes out in November starting at $1400 for the body.
Now might be a good time for Sony pump the brakes a bit. This year, they dropped a lot of new mirrorless cameras. I don’t want them to go the way of Motorola and RAZR themselves out of the game.
