In case you thought otherwise, Apple isn’t taking a long hiatus on further development of Siri and its Apple Intelligence suite of AI features. According to a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple plans to use a custom version of Google’s Gemini AI to power some of Siri’s features.
Apple is finalizing its plans and will reportedly pay Google $1 billion per year for access to Gemini. Apple would run a custom version of Gemini on its Private Cloud Compute servers to help Siri summarize, plan, and execute complex tasks — essentially making Siri less useless.
This coincides with the information we shared last week from Bloomberg, as Apple plans to integrate other AI solutions, such as Anthropic and OpenAI, to power Apple Intelligence. Apple currently uses ChatGPT to power Siri for complex queries and plans to do the same with Gemini.
However, Gemini is supposed to be an expensive placeholder, as Apple plans to develop its solution to eventually replace Gemini. But it needs help to properly compete in the AI space for its mobile devices in the meantime.
