Earlier this morning, Motorola and Verizon Wireless held a press event to unveil the new lineup for the Droid family of devices. While many of the details leaked out previously, Motorola did surprise us by offering many of the newer features rumored for the Moto X. The new family consists of: the Droid Mini, the Droid Ultra, & the Droid Maxx. Let’s meet the new family, shall we?
The 2013 Droid family offers 24% faster CPU speeds, 100% faster GPU, a Kevlar unibody design w/ Gorilla Glass coating, and is water-repellant. Motorola’s is using their new custom X8 Mobile processing center that combines 2 application computing cores, 4 GPU chip, 1 contextual computing, & 1 natural language computing. The Circle Widgets are back but are now dubbed the Droid Command Center.
The Droid Mini offers a 4.3inch Super AMOLED HD display, powered by a Snapdragon S4 Pro 1.7GHz dual-core processor + quad-core graphics processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, and a 2000 mAh battery. The Mini will cost you $99.99 on contract.
The Droid Ultra offers a 5inch HD display, powered by a Snapdragon S4 Pro 1.7GHz dual-core processor + quad-core graphics processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and a 2130 mAh battery (suggested 24-hour battery life). The Ultra will cost you $199.99 on contract.
The Droid Maxx offers a 5inch HD display, powered by a Snapdragon S4 Pro 1.7GHz dual-core processor + quad-core graphics processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and a 3500 mAh battery (suggested 48-hour battery life). The Maxx will cost you $299.99 on contract.
All devices are running Android 4.2.2, 2MP front-facing + a f/2.4 10MP rear-facing Clear Pixel camera w/ 60fps 1080p HD video capture.
Droid Zap is their native media sharing feature a la Galaxy S Beam that allows you to share photos by swiping up to share and catch them by swiping down. Also along for the ride, are the many features expected to see on the upcoming Moto X like access voice access to Google Now via Touchless Control and double-twist of the wrist for Quick Camera Capture.
The viral game Ingress come pre-loaded and Droid users can invite up to 5 users. Consumers who buy/pre-order by September 30th get 6 months of Google All Access service for free. Nice! The Droid Ultra and Maxx are available for pre-order now via the DroidDoes site. Both devices will officially launch on August 20th while the Droid Mini comes out on the 29th.
