The Halo series was the bread and butter of the Xbox for many of years in the past.  The 5th installment of Halo is the game many Xbox fans have been waiting for.  For some, it will be the reason to finally upgrade from a 360 to the Xbox One for the holidays.

I downloaded my retail copy of Halo 5 on the day after it launched, ergo this review being a bit on the late side.  And yes, it is massive at nearly 60GB but most of you already knew that.  Master Chief is back and so is Halo multiplayer.  Time to see if part 5 was worth the wait.  Let's dive into our spoiler-free review of Halo 5: Guardians.

For the 1st time in a Halo Campaign mode, you get to run w/ actual other Spartans other than your average, disposable UNSC military personnel.  I'll give 343 Industries this much, they didn't make them too much of mindless useless players on the field.  They actually help out a bit when clearing the field of Covenant or Forerunner forces as well as revive you when your energy gets low.  However, there is a time limit on reviving and being revived BTW.

The mechanics of Halo's gameplay has been updated to that of 2015 standards.

The campaign is reminiscent of Halo 2 in regards to having dual storylines w/ 2 different main characters (Master Chief & Captain Locke).  There is a total of 15 mission that took me a little over 9 hours to complete.  There is only 1 real boss you come across as you fight him several times.  I'll leave out exactly who/what is the actual villain is.  Your new Spartan abilities include a jump & hover, ground pound, and a rush attack.  Along w/ this, you can grab onto ledges and dodge blasts w/ a boost.

After the past very Halo installments and other FPS games like Call Of Duty getting more elaborate w/ their multiplayer features, it was time for Halo to kick things up a bit.  New to the Halo world of multiplayer is Req packs, which you can unlock weapons to use in multiplayer (either permanently or temporarily).

Warzone is my new favorite part of Halo.

The biggest addition to multiplayer is Warzone.  It is part Slayer, part Campaign, and part Capture The Tower if I were to describe it.   It is 2 teams of 12 players on a massive map against one another.  Covenant & Promethean enemies/bosses appear on the map throughout the fight.  The 1st team to 1000 points takes the W.  The 1st time playing it can be a bit of a mess & overwhelming.  But once you get the hang out of it, you'll love it.

Halo 5 is a great game but its really all about the multiplayer.

Unfortunately, the big hunt plot in which they appeared to be the big draw in the commercials is not so much.  This only applies to those of you who actually still play the campaign mode.  Its more of a misunderstanding.  But this doesn't take away from the gameplay.  Most gamers these days are all about the online multiplayer.  Warzone is a great standout mode for those of you w/ love to play w/ your friends on a team.  Overall, it is still one of the best installments of the Halo series.
