Earlier this week, we got a chance to check out the new 2018 Mazda 6 in NYC. This was courtesy fo Amazon & Mazda which coincides w/ the kick off of the NY Auto Show opening tomorrow to the public. We got a chance to check out the ins & outs of the new car as well as give it a spin. But before we dive into our brief time driving it, let's break down what's all that is new.
So for starters, damn-near all of the changes will be on the interior & under the hood while the exterior will tout a minor refresh. As far as features go, you'll get a 6-speaker sound system, rear-view camera, Bluetooth connectivity, blind spot monitoring w/rear-cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking, and the 8inch infotainment display dubbed Mazda Connect. The base engine is a 2.5-liter SkyActiv-G engine w/ cylinder-deactivation tech & 187hp. All of this is within the base model.
Then you max out at a turbocharged 2.5-liter SkyActiv-G engine w/ 250hp, 11-speaker Bose sound system, heads-up display w/ traffic sign recognition, cooled & heated front seats & heated rear seats and steering wheel, Nappa leather seats, Japanese Sen wood interior detailing, suede finishes, 360-degree camera + front-rear parking sensors, frameless rearview mirror, and a gunmetal grille. This is at the top of the line Signature Trim.
Now back to driving it as we tested the maxed out Signature Trim:
- You could feel the turbo engine when pulling out despite still being a 4-cylinder
- The automatic emergency braking is a cool feature to have
- The inside cabin was comfy
- The sound system was great
- The 8inch infotainment display was fine although I would have preferred a bit better resolution for the cameras
- The lane departures worked well as I switched several lanes to make a left turn.
- The trunk was massive
The 2018 Mazda 6 starts off at around $22,000 and maxes out at around $35,000. The new 6 will be out next month at Mazda dealerships across the country. If you're interested in what you see here, you can check it out at the NY Auto Show.
