So we told you about this was coming and today is the announcement day.  Sony making some changes to  their PlayStation Plus service to go head-to-head w/ Xbox Game Pass.  Kicking off in June, Sony will have 3 tiers of PS Plus: Essential, Extra, & Premium.  

The current model w/ 2 monthly downloadable games, cloud storage, & multiplayer becomes Essential for $60.  While the Extra & Essential will include a regularly refreshed game library and Premium adds access to OG PS, PS2, & PSP games w/ limited-time trials. Unfortunately there is no day-one access to new games though which is crucial to compete w/ Microsoft.

PlayStation Plus Essential

  • Benefits
    • Provides the same benefits that PlayStation Plus members are getting today, such as:
      • Two monthly downloadable games
      • Exclusive discounts
      • Cloud storage for saved games

    • There are no changes for existing PlayStation Plus members in this tier.

    • Offers cloud streaming access for original PlayStation, PS2, PSP and PS4 games offered in the Extra and Premium tiers in markets** where PlayStation Now is currently available. Customers can stream games using PS4 and PS5 consoles, and PC.*** 
    • Time-limited game trials will also be offered in this tier, so customers can try select games before they buy.

So there you have it.  This is the beginning of their Xbox Game Pass competitor.  I say beginning as I’m sure it will be tweaked as time goes on – pending Sony doesn’t dead it.  With the death merging of PlayStation Now on top of their current Plus subscription, this is how they plan to do it.
