Today is the day; more like tonight is the night. Google has partnered with Samsung to spearhead its Android XR platform, which is Google’s new OS that combines AI, AR, and VR to create a completely new digital experience. The new platform brings forth a new device, introducing the $1,800 Galaxy XR, or the Android-powered Vision Pro headset.

Underneath the Galaxy XR headset, it’s powered by a Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 processor with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage; it uses mini-LEDs, which support 4K resolution and up to 90Hz refresh rates; it supports 3D photo and video capture; it has six mics, supports Wi-Fi 7, and has a quoted battery life of 2.5 hours.

The headset itself weighs 545 grams, and its included external battery pack weighs 302 grams. The positive side is that you can continue using the headset while it’s charging. While the Galaxy XR has a $250 companion controller, it’s not required to use it thanks to its onboard sensors, cameras, etc.

Android XR is built with Gemini at its core, as you can access features like Gemini Live, Circle to Search, Google Maps, and YouTube while asking Gemini questions about what you’re viewing. This provides a similar, yet more immersive Gemini experience than on your phone.

And despite the $1,800 price tag, the Galaxy XR adds more value than Apple’s offering by combining the headset with a bevy of free services for a limited time. With the Explorer Pack, the Galaxy XR includes a free year of Google AI Pro, Google Play Pass, and YouTube Premium; a free season of NBA League Pass; and YouTube TV for $1 per month for three months.

The Galaxy XR is only the beginning of XR devices to come, although I’m sure everyone’s waiting on the Android XR glasses that were teased at Google I/O. Samsung’s XR headset is available for purchase now.

So, coming in at half of what Apple charges for its Vision Pro, you think this might fare better in the market?
