So last week, a big change for one of Tesla’s most popular features went into effect: Full Self-Driving is now a monthly subscription. The recent change is unfortunate for new Model 3 and Model Y customers, who will now have to pay a costly monthly subscription of $99.
The new Full Self-Driving (FSD) subscription package doesn’t just include the popular Tesla feature; it also consists of Lane Centering and Autosteer. The latter was previously included for free with your Tesla purchase. This feature was once standard, which customers could opt-in for monthly or once per month—if desired—but is no longer the case.
Also, after February 14, buying the FSD option for an $8,000 lump fee will no longer be an option. In addition to the bad news, Tesla CEO Elon Musk stated on X that the FSD package won’t stay at $99 monthly forever. As more features arrive in the package, you can expect the price to increase. If you already have a Tesla with FSD and plan on buying a new model, you have until March 31 to transfer the feature over for free.
Why the new subscription model? Speculation for the move suggests it’s due to Tesla approving its CEO to receive up to $1 trillion for reaching 10 million active FSD subscriptions. I sincerely doubt this change will help achieve such a goal, but I could be wrong.
