As DJI continues to struggle to sell its products, including the Osmo Pocket 4 here in the US, Insta360 finally made its first handheld stabilized camera official: the Luna Ultra 8K. That’s right: while their competitors are holding their ground at 4K, Insta360 goes to the next level with 8K on a 3-axis gimbal. It’s available now, starts at $770, and you can pick one up at Insta360 online, Amazon, B&H, or Best Buy.
The Luna Ultra is a lightweight camera that weighs just over 200g but comes in a bit heavier than the Osmo Pocket 4. Regarding its cameras, the Ultra is the first of a 6-year partnership between Insta360 and Leica optics. It’s armed with a one-inch 8K sensor with a Leica Summicron lens and a second 1/1.3-inch telephoto lens capable of up to 12x zoom or 6x lossless zoom. Its optics can capture 37MP stills, up to 14 stops of dynamic range, and 8K video up to 30 fps with 10-bit Dolby Vision support. The Ultra can also record 4K up to 120 fps and 1080p at 240 fps. The Ultra’s footage also supports editing for software such as Adobe Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro.
On the stabilization side, it has a 3-axis mechanical system that works hand-in-hand with electronic image stabilization for smooth footage. The company’s Deep Track 5.0 tracking software, which includes auto-tracking, active zoom tracking, group tracking, and smart framing. Insta360 equips it with a detachable 2-inch OLED touchscreen display that can remotely control the camera from up to 66ft away. Its mics are equipped with built-in wind guards, but you can add an external mic if you desire. Inside, the Ultra is quoted up to a four-hour battery life with its 1,550 mAh battery and offers 47GB of internal storage, which is expandable up to 1TB via microSD card.
