First, it was Verizon and now its Sprint’s turn to hit the switch on the 5G network. It went live yesterday in 4 select markets as the hardware to support is ready to go on sale as well. Let’s get into more details of it all.
Here are Sprint’s 5G markets at launch:
- Atlanta: Sprint 5G covers approximately 150 square miles and 565,000 people from downtown to Dunwoody!
- Dallas-Fort Worth: Sprint 5G covers approximately 575 square miles and 1.6 million people across the greater Dallas-Fort Worth area serving Irving and downtown Fort Worth, including Sundance Square, Las Colinas, and the North Dallas area from Preston Hollow to Addison.
- Houston: Sprint 5G covers approximately 165 square miles and 800,000 people across the cultural center of Houston from downtown to Memorial City Mall/City Centre Plaza.
- Kansas City: Sprint is the first wireless operator to launch 5G in its hometown, with service covering approximately 225 square miles and 625,000 people from downtown Kansas City, MO, to Overland Park, KS where the company is headquartered.
In coming weeks, the next phase of the 5G rollout is coming to Chicago, Los Angeles, NYC, Phoenix, & Washington DC. Once all 9 markets are up and running, Sprint aims to cover close to 11.5 million people.
Our colleague E of BooredAtWork was out in Dallas yesterday w/ the LG V50 ThinQ doing speed tests across the city. You can check out the speed test results below.
5G speeds through various uber rides around #Dallas 😂 (Big City), is impressive for Sprint inital rollout.

Looks like @AbdLmoughith had the closet number to my max 5G speeds for the day.
I will let you guys know where my next 5G adventure is #5Gishere #Ad #sprint5G pic.twitter.com/UdZWvFgz0h
Now you may look at those speeds and be unimpressed but that is due to the technologies they used for their 5G network. So the way Sprint’s 5G works is that is combines both 4G LTE & 5G for dual connectivity called mid-band spectrum. In doing so, they can get faster speeds out to more people in less time. As opposed to Verizon’s 5G Ultra Band Network gives you faster speeds but at a super-limited area at a time – for now.
Also noteworthy, the LG V50 ThinQ and the HTC 5G Hub devices are both available right now. So if you’re a Sprint customer and looking to dive into their 5G, you got a phone and a 5G hotspot to play with.
So who’s looking to take the 5G plunge w/ Sprint?
